SERGEI PROKOFIEV Classical Symphony, Op. 25 (Symphony No. 1)
Handel’s celebratory, upbeat, and vibrant Royal Fireworks Music begins this program under the baton of guest conductor Carlos Izcaray. The program continues with Prokofiev’s first symphony, a landmark neo-classical work inspired by a vision of a Haydn as a contemporary composer. Featuring the Brass section of TPS, Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzona per sonare No. 2 was composed in the early Baroque period and will surround the audience in glorious, majestic brass music. Gabriela Lena Frank, Composer-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra whose work was featured in the inaugural season of REVERB, mixes elements of western classical and Andean folk musical traditions with Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout.
